Dodgy Pubs

Graham Nelson

Friday 29th September 2006

Or more to the point - surprised in local hostelries - good and bad on away trips.

Here are just a small selection of the many I have visited in no particular order...

1. GREENOCK MORTON JULY 20TH 1996

Once inside this was actually a pleasant experience. The pub was over a launderette and it was this fact alone that stopped some of the toughest blokes I know from going in. If they had who knows what might have kicked off!

2. MONTOSE JULY 18TH 1998

A seemingly pleasant drink with a local lad who had worked abroad for several years. Now, I am the first to admit that I have a very loud voice. The said local took exception to this and if I had not been with another North Ender called Eddie Wignall I may not be here to tell the tale.

3. KIRKBY STEPHEN FEBRUARY 27TH 1996

After coming from behind to beat Darlington 2-1 at the old Feethams ground I travelled back in Mick and Linda Ward's 4x4, singing loud and proud with my head out of the sunroof - luckily for them! We called in for a celebrational drink at Kirkby Stephen and again my big mouth almost got me in serious trouble. Apparently I said some quite uncomplimentary things about Carlisle.

4. MILLWALL MARCH 5TH 2002

In the company of Steve Kay - former assistant manager of the Sumners and now Steward AGAIN of the Tory club - I ventured into three separate local pubs in the area of the ground. At Millwall of all places! It was a night match and we had timed our visit so as to arrive in the first boozer at 4pm. After visiting a second and then a third pub we decided not to push our luck so a little after 6pm we left and made tracks for the ground giving thanks for our survival.

5. CARDIFF CITY JANUARY 3RD 2000

After enjoying a quiet drink alone for almost an hour I bumped into Steve from Barton. We exchanged greetings a little too loudly and immediately put ourselves at risk. A quick exit just about saved our skins!

6. HARTLEPOOL APRIL 27TH 1996

Following an eventful day I am informed that there was some kind of an incident with a dog (the four legged kind) in Barnard Castle. If anyone could supply me with any information on this subject I would greatly appreciate it, my mind is a complete blank! The I.S.A supporters' bus dropped me off in Lancaster?? But I stunned my fellow fans by beating them back to the Sumners!

7. BARNET FEBRUARY 28TH 1996

Because of Police restrictions our coach had to stop at motorway services at least 3 miles from the ground at 1:30pm. But where there's a will there's a way and three of the more thirsty of us commandeered a taxi to take us to the nearest watering holes. We had a few pre match drinks in a scruffy looking boozer close to the ground before making our way to the match.

8. FULHAM SEPTEMBER 23RD 1995

A local pub sold a bitter called 'The Dog's Bollocks' I couldn't give it away!

9. CAMBRIDGE APRIL 16TH 1996

A door which had not been used since the pub was altered (there was a brick wall behind it) broke off from its fixings and into my arms - so determined was I to get through it! Of course everyone else had gone in the correct way!!

10. BURNLEY JANUARY 25TH 1997

Suffering from a rather bad cough I enquired at the bar about the whereabouts of a local chemist and realised my mistake immediately. We could hear the knives being sharpened so supped up and left as soon as possible. At another pub I was more popular after expressing my views on the plastics.

I hope the above is just a start and that I have rekindled memories of the games played on those dates thus stimulating more people to join in with Fans Focus.
